MRGB-AHEC Director Name: Julie Bazan, MHA
Director Bio: Since 2010, she has been the Executive Director for the Area Health Education Center of the Mid Rio Grande Border Region (AHEC) which serves Webb, Zapata, Duval, La Salle and Dimmit Counties. AHEC is an outreach program under the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. As the Executive Director, she is responsible for;
- providing leadership, direction and fiscal oversight to the existing programs which serve the Mid Rio Grande Border Region residents;
- developing new opportunities to support the educational resources for the practicing health care professionals; and
- implementing programs to encourage students, of all grade levels, to pursue a higher education and possibly a career in health care.
In 2015, she was selected to serve for two years as the Regional Coordinator for the Centers for Disease Control HPV Project focused on developing and providing HPV-related training sessions to clinicians nationally. In this capacity, she worked with AHECs in New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas to provide leadership, training and guidance to assure that HPV project goals were met. In 2016, the MRGB-AHEC received a grant to provide education on HPV immunization in all six counties. She continues to work with the NAO/CDC HPV project at the National level.
Julie Bazan has extensive experience in the private and public sectors in the areas of management, administration, marketing, grant writing/administration/management as well as project design/implementation/coordination. In 2011, Ms. Bazan served as the Project Administrator for the community-wide study Laredo/Webb County Needs Assessment. A project funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to identify the health and work force needs of the community. Over the years, she has been an instrumental part of various research teams by organizing and supporting numerous community-based education and research projects in Laredo, Texas to secure an improved quality of life for children and their families. These research projects are in the areas of diabetes, asthma, child nutrition in school settings, pipeline programs for youth and binational health factors.
She is an active member in the community and an advocate for veterans and their families. She serves on various community projects in different capacities including Laredo Daybreak Rotary, Casa de Misericordia, Border Region Behavioral Health Center, Laredo Veterans Coalition, Webb County Domestic Violence Coalition, Laredo Health Coalition, Webb County Promotoras Coalition, Laredo Community College STEM Advisory Board, Harmony T-STEM Advisory Board, Project GROW, PK-16 Council for Educational Excellence, Webb County (SCAN) Community Coalition, Family Assistance & Community Empowerment Coalition, UISD’s Superintendent’s Business Advisory Council, LISD Health Services Advisory Committee, UISD Health Services Advisory Committee, Transforming Texas Healthy People Advisory Council, Laredo of Tomorrow Coalition, Mayor’s Active Living Council, Bi-National Health Care Council and the Zapata County Higher Education Advisory Board. State and National Memberships include the HPV State Coalition, Asthma Coalition of Texas and the National AHEC Organization. Her commitment and passion for improving the well-being of others has earned her recognition at the local, State and National level.
Julie Bazan holds a Graduate Degree in Health Care Administration and her undergraduate studies are in social sciences. She is a candidate for a Doctoral of Management in Organizational Leadership from the University of Phoenix.
