AHEC Medical Conference Draws Experts and Providers

Over 200 medical providers including medical doctors, nurses, therapists, counselors, social workers and nursing students attended the 34th Annual Update in Medicine Conference sponsored by the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) and the Webb-Zapata-Jim Hogg County Medical Society on October 26th and 27th at the UT Health Laredo Regional Campus. The medical conference, offered each year in October, is a two-day educational event that hosts research and medical experts, from various parts of the State and various specialties. The experts present the latest findings on medical conditions that impact the region and through their presentation, they provide current information in regard to diagnosis, treatment and preventive measures. Ms. Julie Bazan, AHEC Executive Director, welcomed participants and introduced the program by calling on the conference planning committee members who served as moderators. The program included presentations on stroke, diabetes, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, mental health, food allergies, migraine, respiratory conditions and others. One of the keynote speakers, Dr. Gail E. Tomlinson offered an Update in Cancer Genetics: Approach to the High-Risk Individual. She described the timeline on Cancer Gene Discovery which started in 1975; she presented the latest tools and methods utilized to detect various cancers through genetics. Dr. Patrick T. Noonan, Jr. presented on Cerebrovascular Disease and Acute Stroke: Diagnosis and Treatment. His presentation offered detailed information on the various types of strokes as well the treatment methods and expectations for recovery. Each speaker welcomed questions from the audience. In summary, the two-day educational event was very well received by the participants. “This has been an outstanding program; it is impressive to hear the new methods being used for diagnosis and treatment of some of these conditions” remarked Dr. Fernando Prince who has been attending the program for numerous years. Providers and students in attendance, qualified for continuing education credits and engaged in conversations pertaining to health care issues and prevalent diseases in the region. “It is an opportunity for the medical community to gather, network and obtain current information to help improve their delivery of health care” stated Ms. Julie Bazan, AHEC Executive Director “we recognize Doctors Hospital of Laredo, Laredo Medical Center, Specialty/Rehabilitation Hospital and DHR Health for their support of our educational initiative; they believe in our community and they make this conference a successful program for everyone”.
