College Enrichment College Enrichment Program Concludes

The Southwest Border AHEC collaborated with the Southwest Texas Junior College in a college enrichment program from May 14th through 25th. The College Enrichment Program (CEP) is a tuition free two-week program for undergraduate freshmen and sophomores interested in entering the health professions. Fifteen eager students were selected for the program. The purpose of the program is to facilitate the entry of these students into medical and/or health care professional schools by improving their performance on admissions tests and to help facilitate the educational and personal growth of these students. The program included enrichment activities to enhance the participant’s academic and communication skills.  Sessions also included the professional school application process (i.e. medical school admissions), financing for professional education, preparing for standardized exams (i.e. GRE, MCAT), critical thinking, study skills and science enrichment classes. Students were taken to the UT Health Science Center of San Antonio to get a tour of the University and to learn about our programs at UTHSCSA. Upon successful completion of the program, each participant was awarded a Certificate of Achievement. The students were also taught CPR and received an American Heart Association “Heartsaver” CPR AED certification. A total of 80 hours of instruction was provided by four instructors who taught one of four specific modules (critical thinking, science enrichment, communication, or study skills).
