Yarincka Barrientos from Southwest Border AHEC is our AHEC Scholar of the Month. Yarincka is studying nursing at Southwest Texas Junior College and she's been a part of the AHEC Scholars Program since Summer 2019. Prior to her participation in the AHEC Scholars Program Yarincka was part of the Southwest Texas Junior College Health Enrichment Program, which is a two-week preparation course that helps students improve on their qualifications to be competitive applicants for admission into a health professional school. Yarincka has also dedicated her time to volunteer with organizations including The American Red Cross, doing disaster preparedness and Spanish translation work, and Santana Family Care helping out in the clinic. She expresses a deep interest in working with medically underserved populations in order to give back to the community that she was raised in. "Growing up seeing people in my community struggle with accessing healthcare motivated me to find a profession that would allow me to aid them in some way," Yarincka stated. In her spare time, Yarincka enjoys staying physically active, playing chess and playing the piano. Congratulations Yarincka on all your fantastic accomplishments. We wish you the very best in all that you do!
