MRGB-AHEC HPV Immunization Outreach

Dr. Oda Garcia, MRGB-AHEC Community Outreach Coordinator, continues to educate the community on the importance of the HPV immunization. Recently, she presented to counselors, social workers, educators, health providers, health students, veterans and community members during the 14th Annual Mental Health & Substance Abuse Awareness Symposium.  Utilizing the “You are the Key in Cancer Prevention” materials, Dr. Garcia linked the importance of cancer prevention and how cancer, as a terminal illness at times, can impact the mental health of the individual and family members. This important presentation was on Wednesday, May 10, 2017, and was made possible in collaboration with various community leaders and organizations who partner to increase mental health awareness and education. Dr. Garcia reminded the audience that “Cancer may make most people feel helpless; however, there are actions to take to help cope emotionally and gain peace of mind”.  A total of 209 participants received valuable information regarding HPV vaccination and learned practical ways to help cancer patients cope with psychological stress. The MRGB-AHEC is currently offering free educational presentations on the importance of HPV immunization, cancer prevention and other.  To register for an educational session or receive additional information, call Dr. Oda Garcia at (956) 712-0037 or email at GarciaO6@uthscsa.edu.
