South Coastal AHEC Hosts and Participates in Several Events

The AHEC situated in Corpus Christi successfully trained 15+ students in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Training Course on February 27th. Their ACLS course, through lecture and live demonstration, highlights the importance of high-performance team dynamics and communication; systems of care; and recognition of and intervention in cardiopulmonary arrest, immediate post-cardiac arrest, acute dysrhythmia stroke and ACS.

SC AHEC also had the pleasure of attending the March 2nd Corpus Christi Heart Ball, a program of the American Heart Association’s Go Red Por Tu Corazon movement that celebrates the energy, passion, and power of Latinas and Hispanic women to band together and wipe out heart diseases and stroke. Belinda Flores did an amazing job giving this year’s keynote address and our team took home 3rd place in the “Best Centerpiece” competition.

SC AHEC enjoyed participating in the 5th Annual Discover Your Direction Conference on February 28th hosted by Coastal Compass Education and Career Resource Center. This event provided an opportunity for over 150 10th and 11th graders from various school districts within Nueces County to learn about the importance of education beyond high school as well as to explore various career opportunities that will be available to them. This AHEC provided students with a wealth of information on various careers in the health care field.

SC AHEC was invited to the February 23rd Community Health Hearts Heath Fair in Aransas Pass, Texas. Aransas Pass is just one of the many towns that were affected by Hurricane Harvey. Sadly, there is still no active medical clinic in this little town. The SC AHEC team provided BMI, A1C and Blood Pressure screenings for local residents. Through the promotion of our SEMM Program, our CHWs were able to spend time with local women to discuss women’s health and get them enrolled for services.

SC AHEC outreach came from our Salud En Mis Manos (SEMM) team stationed at the Community Booth at La Palmera Mall. Our ladies had the opportunity to speak with women (and even a few men) regarding the importance of cancer prevention though women health screenings. Eligibilities and education were done on site.

SC AHEC future events for upcoming newsletters will include Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics on May 3rd, 2019; Annual Hospice Symposium on May 29th, 2019 and the 8th Annual Multidisciplinary Pharmacotherapy Conference on May 31st~June 2nd, 2019.  Stay tuned.
