AHEC Scholars Program Application Process Starts

The ST-AHEC is pleased to announce the opening of the application process for Winter 2019.

The AHEC Scholars Program is a unique opportunity for health and health related discipline students to gain professional experience working in an interprofessional team-based community or clinical care setting, while they are still in school. This two-year program offers didactic and practical learning experiences that enhance a student’s traditional curriculum by offering opportunities to:

  • Learn more about the roles and responsibilities of other health professions.
  • Work in team-based environments that foster inclusivity and focus on patient centered care.
  • Broaden their scope of practice and learn strategies to become a better practitioner.
  • Learn and understand the unique challenges that face underserved and rural populations when accessing care and achieving good health status.

While enrolled in the AHEC Scholars Program, students will be expected to complete 40 hours of self-directed online learning modules, per year, focused on six core topic areas, Interprofessional Education, Behavioral Health Integration, Social Determinants of Health, Cultural Competency, Practice Transformation, and Current and Emerging Health Issues. In addition, students will be asked to complete 40 hours of team-based interprofessional practical experience, per year, at a community-based organization or clinic.

Students can be from various health and health related professions, including: dentistry, nursing, medicine, occupational therapy, psychology, pharmacy social work, community health worker, and more. Students will also receive a $1,000 stipend to off-set any costs.
