Dr. Julie Bazan is a highly experienced leader in South Texas, with over 30 years of experience in various fields including leadership, nonprofit, healthcare, higher education, and community-based research. Her accomplishments in South Texas support the AHEC mission to increase the number of primary health providers in medically underserved areas. The Mid Rio Grande Border AHEC team has succeeded in developing and delivering programs to support practicing providers and encourage K-16 students to consider careers in healthcare. Dr. Bazan has received recognition for her work in conducting needs assessments, program development, and designing initiatives to meet the needs of medically underserved communities in the South Texas region. She began her career with AHEC in 1993 and became Executive Director in 2010. She contributes to numerous community-based research projects at the local, state, and national levels on a variety of health issues impacting residents. Dr. Bazan is the President of the National AHEC Organization (NAO). Her commitment and passion for improving the lives of others have contributed to numerous successful projects in the region. She is an active member of the community, serving on numerous boards and committees. Dr. Bazan holds a Doctoral Degree in Organizational Leadership and a Graduate Degree from the University of Phoenix. Her undergraduate studies are in social sciences with a minor in business. She is a certified Community Health Worker and holds certifications in nonprofit leadership management, CPR, Community Emergency Response, and Youth Mental Health First Aid..

Vicky Morales is a versatile professional serving as an Administrative Assistant Associate, Conference Coordinator, and Community Health Worker at Area Health Education Center in Laredo, Texas since February 2012. As the Academic & Continuing Education Programs Coordinator, Vicky designs and administers tailored continuing education programs, collaborating with stakeholders to meet diverse community and industry needs. Her eye for detail ensures the delivery of high-quality educational initiatives. Vicky’s commitment to community health extends to her role as a Certified Community Health Worker Instructor and practitioner. She designs engaging training materials, conducts impactful sessions, and actively advocates for the vital role of community health workers. Vicky’s involvement in committees and coalitions further strengthens community partnerships and access to resources. With a diverse background spanning accounts receivable management and assistant management roles, Vicky brings a wealth of experience to her current position. Her proficiency in office software, bilingualism, and strong interpersonal skills enrich her ability to serve the community effectively. Vicky holds an Associate in Applied Sciences from Laredo Community College and boasts various vocational certifications, including Community Health Worker and CPR certification. Her commitment to lifelong learning is evident through her pursuit of executive certificates and specialized training programs. With a comprehensive skill set encompassing administrative expertise, program coordination, and community health advocacy, Vicky Morales is a valuable asset to Area Health Education Center – Laredo, Texas, and the communities it serves.

Hazel Medellin started her journey with Mid Rio Grande Border AHEC in March 2011 and has since become an invaluable member of the AHEC team. Her exceptional skills extend across various domains, including accounting, grant reporting, and the creative development of flyers to promote programs through Technology/Social Media platforms within different communities. These contributions significantly contribute to the success of the Mid Rio Grande Border AHEC programs in the region. In her role, Hazel oversees a range of continuing education programs tailored for health care providers, educators, law enforcement personnel, counselors, and social service providers across counties such as Dimmit, Duval, LaSalle, Jim Hogg, Starr, Webb, Willacy, and Zapata. Her commitment to advancing knowledge and skills in these fields is commendable. Hazel holds a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences Degree with a focus in Accounting from Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Her dedication extends beyond formal education, as she is a Certified Community Health Worker and an accomplished Community Health Worker Instructor. She completed her training at the Texas A&M Health Science Center National Community Health Worker Training Center. Hazel has successfully graduated from the non-profit business program offered by the Laredo Chamber of Commerce, further enhancing her expertise. Her certifications include non-profit management, CPR, Community Emergency Response, and Youth Mental Health First Aid. Additionally, she serves as a Board Member at Casa de Misericordia, a Domestic Violence Victims Shelter. Hazel Medellin’s unwavering commitment to community health and education exemplifies her passion and dedication. She continues to make a positive impact in her field, ensuring the well-being of individuals and communities alike.
